When the dull glow from the accessibility dimmed screen still burns the back of your retinas, it’s time to move to audio-only stimulation. 2 days in bed, laid up with a migraine, meant time for some cerebral hip-hop and basketball podcasts.

Aside: For all the hate he got from Maryland fans, JJ Redick turned out to be a pretty solid dude, save for his awful Comedy movie actor draft takes. Jason Sudeikis’s own mom wouldn’t even draft him #4. We got to see JJ hit a game winner vs the Kings in January and come out to troll Harry Giles (one of the nicest guys ever) and MBIII during their Duke meetup speeches. Cover photo from that day (obviously).

I get immeasurable joy from realizing this picture was only possible because Vlade Divac overlooked Luka Dončić in favor of Bagley in the 2018 draft. Love the dude, but Bags wouldn’t have the Mavs in the position to step-back 3 their way into a game 4 OT victory over the (previously feared) Clips. Plus, he’d just look awkward being hoisted into the air Simba-style by Dirk in those gifs.

Conway the Machine “Seen Everything but Jesus feat. Freddie Gibbs”

I had this one repeat much of the last few days while struggling with this migraine. As I explained to Stacey, the plodding beat paired with the time distorted piano record loop feels like how my brain was processing things. There is not a full awareness of surroundings, but the constant pulsing of waves of pain is juxtaposed by the inconsistent flooding of thoughts and emotions. Its the dual sensation of “flow” and chaos simultaneously.

Benny The Butcher “Crowns for Kings feat. Black Thought”

Another member of the Griselda crew that is full-on taking over 2020 hip-hop. BTB and Black Though slay this record with some hypnotic rhymes.

The beat and enchanting background vocals for this one are sampled from Al Green’s “Look What You Done for Me”. That would explain the smoothness and tone.

Can’t hurt to have a feature from one of the most gifted MCs of all time either. Although who doesn’t try and rhyme dossier, Courvoisier, Gaultier, Cartier, sommelier, etc…

Decapitator of a hater in this modern day
My dossier no less, dealer spray Courvoisier
I’m Jean-Paul Gaultier, Tom Ford, and Cartier
Self-made, I fly vintage from the sommelier

Lyric Jones “Show You How (feat. VIC MENSA)”

This single dropped today, but Lyric Jones has been on my radar since playing the role of team BBQ vs Phonte’s pro-Hike stance on Sesame Street. Shouts to Elmo. Phonte would go on to produce this album too.

Co-signed for by Rapper Big Pooh (Little Brother, duh), not going to miss many tracks like that.
