You could always count on a few new tracks, some classic older ones, and some that stuck out like sore thumbs (looking at you The Locust). In any event they were the perfect soundtrack to a long car ride or background music while hanging out. It was Epitaph records’ enduring “Punk-o-Rama” series. They put out 10 volumes of it over the years, this selection favors the later ones.
1208 “Fall Apart”
Punk-o-Rama: 9
Original Album: Turn of the Screw
I put this one first because I remember it being first on my Winamp playlist back in the day. Band name is pronounced “Twelve oh eight”. That is what Philip Chavez told me, and who is going to argue with that man on these types of things? Not I.
Random Facts: Lead singer, Alex Flynn, is the nephew of Greg Ginn (of Black Flag). I know this in the least punk rock way possible, I learned it in school.(“History of American Independent Rock” ftw)
Hot Water Music “Trusty Chords”
Punk-o-Rama: 8
Original Album: Caution
Are you into covers of punk rock songs? You’ll love this next selection. Hear the original below, then go down a youtube rabbit hole of other great (and not-so-great) bands and artists covering this one. Gaslight Anthem and Dave Hause are some solid entries.
Rancid “As Wicked”
Punk-o-Rama: 8
Original Album: …And Out Come the Wolves
I got to experience a lot while living the SF Bay Area for 7+ years. One of those things was watching a Rancid show in their home town. It was around 2014, but I do “remember” (looked it up in my Note from the show) they played this one.
