This week’s songs are a bit random and scattered, just like my brain of late. As is often the case, the collection of randomness feels like a sense of order. I don’t know if that’s deep or non-sense, but it’s a thin line sometimes. Anyway, a cover of a classic R&B band, early 90s ska heroes, and Ramonescore ahead.
Prince Fatty & Hollie Cook “And The Beat Goes On”
This is a cover of The Whispers and another gem in artists related to The Frightnrs. The Whispers name sounded familiar, for good reason. They have a massive catalogue of hits and are sampled and covered by myriad artists. My favorite Whispers track, which brings me back to 90s R&B, “Rock Steady”. It’s funny that it’s not a traditional rock steady song, but certainly enough to rock you till the break of dawn. If asked yesterday, I would guessed it was by New Edition?
Random: I’ve had this version of the song come up the last few times cleaning the pool, it’s got great vibes for that apparently.
Skankin’ Pickle “20 Nothing”
This is the original Mike Park ska punk band, rocking shows since 1989. They put their records out on their own label, appropriately named Dill Records. And yeah, the name and logo refer to the ska dancing style and not some sort of ill moraled fruit.
This track has an amazing open line,
I can’t even think about the proletariat revolution,

The Follow Ups “Idiocracy”
Stace and I succumb to the Netflix marketing machine + social media hype and watched Don’t Look Up a week ago. It was one of the recently very popular type of show, the appearance of quality. Throw some good actors in there, make the production slick, and market the F out of it on release week. For the demise of the world through stupidity, I preferred Idiocracy*. That was at least a more honest presentation of the movie premise.
Are you f’ing kidding me?!? This movie sucks.
Me watching the end of Don’t Look Up.
The Follow Ups are a rad “Ramonescore” band. I didn’t know that was a thing, but it quickly made sense hearing tracks like this or the one about Razor Ramone. My friend C Smith recommended this album in a random text around my birthday a few years ago. It was the same sort of music fodder we shared constantly during college. I recommended Little Brother’s May the Lord Watch, because he appreciates good hip hop and everyone should be listening to it.
* I’ll qualify that I haven’t seen the movie since 2007ish and I certainly made some questionable choices back then. Like over-calling standard 3bet hands in position at $2/5 NL because I like to play multi-way pots with marginal holdings and no fold equity.
Warning: Without rewatching, I’m sure the movie had plenty of cringy ableist jokes too.
