If you’re hoping for The Beatles, Oasis, or (more likely) classic NWOBHM bands like Iron Maiden or Motörhead… sorry. That’s not the type of British music we’ve got going on this time. Although, feel free to visit the Fastenal Receiving Department edition for the first Motörhead appearance on the blog.

Joy Division “Love Will Tear Us Apart”

A classic song from this iconic/tragic band. It took me reading the wiki about it to realize the title is a play on the Captain and Tennille* song “Love Will Keep Us Together”. (You can hear it in your head, can’t you?)

$210,000 – Price that badass guitar from the video sold for. You know, if you happened to be curious like myself. It’s called a Vox Phantom.

Other fun tidbits: This song was released after Ian Curtis’ death. New Order would play this song live, as its most of the same dudes minus Ian. It seems like a song from the incredible Halt and Catch First soundtrack, but in reality, they chose “She’s Lost Control”.

*I couldn’t have named a Captain and Tennille song, but love the Phonte related word play about God: “he’s the captain that told me to kneel”.

Bloc Party “Banquet”

It had been awhile for this band with me, but revisiting them has me remember why I dug the records to start. They work great on poker soundtracks too due to their upbeat tempos and loud guitars.

British Facts: The Streets did a “remix” of this song. Mike Skinner tells the story about stealing a mic from a radio promo event, which he’d go on to record number one hits and almost two full records. I guess that part of The Grand did come for free….

Seafood “Desert Stretched Before the Sun”

This indie band, of early 2000s opening for “emo” bands fame, had a few great records. I saw em open for Dashboard, Hot Rod Circuit, and Jimmy Eat World. My vegan self cringes at the band name, but dig the song and most of the When Do We Start Fighting album none the less.
