A city dear to my heart for no particular reason*, Chicago is home to many a punk/ska/rock band I’ve dug over the years. Sure, Alkaline Trio, but particularly the lineage of Brendan Kelly and the Slapstick family tree have long been in the rotation. There could be quite a long post tracking all of that, which I will save for another day. Suffice to say there’s been a lot of great music associated with that tree (The Broadways, The Lawrence Arms, Tuesday, Duvall, The Falcon, and yes of course, Alkaline Trio as well).
I admittedly haven’t added new punk music to my library in quite sometime. I was excited to hear the first two of today’s songs back to back on youtube. The third one is from the new (as in today new) release from The Lawrence Arms Skeleton Coast. Eager to check this whole release out soon.
* A particular reason for my feelings toward Chicago trace back to WGN being available on basic cable in my North Dallas suburb home throughout my childhood. There were lots of hours in front of the TV, as such, I’m a die hard Cubs fan and watched as many 90’s Bulls games as possible.
This Obsession “Yo… I’m No Good”
It was a tweet by @badsandwich that got me to look up this band/song. He was asking about underrated Chicago songs, and a few people called this one out. Video number 2 today played immediately after it (same channel, obv). I played ’em both a bunch on the move down to San Diego, I’ll be interested to see my monthly Spotify breakdown. My guess is “Yo… I’m No Good”, “Overbite”, Gangstarr “Full Clip” (can’t go wrong with classic hip-hop on long road trips) will be top 3.
Sincere Engineer “Overbite”
This is just a great song. There are some authentic lyrics, gritty vocals, interesting guitar riffs, and plenty of tempo changes. It has to be near the top of the list for best songs about Dental school?
I didn’t want to go,
Sincere Engineer
but the rejection still kinda hurt
The Lawrence Arms “PTA”
New video, new album, same stellar band. This isn’t the first time Larry Arms made the blog and really doubt it will be the last.
